What is the Naturally Beautiful Project?

The Naturally Beautiful Project is a collection of portraits photographed by Russell Kilgore that celebrates the beauty and diversity of natural hair while honoring the brave and beautiful ladies that use their hair to proclaim their uniqueness.

Russell's fascination with natural hair began as merely an aesthetic appeal, and whether short and neat or big and floppy, he loved how these women utilized their coiffures to express their individuality and style. After many conversations with women who were at various stages of becoming natural, his fascination evolved into admiration and curiosity because he noticed that a woman's choice to be natural sometimes affected more than just her appearance. He was especially intrigued by the amount of women who wrestled with low self-esteem following their transition particularly those that opted for "The Big Chop". It's because of Russell's growing interest of natural hair and the latent effects of such a choice that has prompted him to start The Naturally Beautiful Project.

Who is eligible to participate in this project?

Any woman that has chosen not to subject their hair to any sort of chemical process is eligible to participate. There isn't a particular look, size, or shape of the hair for this project. Every woman that has adopted a natural-hair lifestyle is encouraged to apply to be a part of this project.

When will the Naturally Beautiful Project end?

The Naturally Beautiful Project doesn't have a definite conclusion. As longs as Russell continues to meet interesting women who adorn their natural hair, he will continue to accept participants.
